We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate International Women’s Day by featuring our March Stargardt’s Star, the incredible Katriona Taylor.
Katriona is jazz singer and an ambassador for Stargardt’s Connected raising awareness and funds by sharing her story through her incredible music. Here is Katriona’s story:
“My journey to becoming a singer hasn’t been the usual one. My first career was as an Intellectual Property solicitor in the City of London. This felt like a great achievement as I had a few more obstacles to overcome than the average person.
I was diagnosed Stargardt’s at the age of seven. I remember the ophthalmologist who broke the news telling me that I would be totally blind by the time I was 21 and that many things in life wouldn’t be possible for me. Fortunately he was wrong on both counts. Yes, I’ve had to be very determined and yes I’ve had to work with speech software which enables me to read. I’ve also had to deal with the assumptions of those around me, both in the education system and working environment, to show them that a visually impaired female is capable of achieving what she sets out to do. I was born into a family whose lives centred around tennis at Wimbledon – my father is
international tennis champion Roger Taylor. Naturally ball sports was not my thing so I had to find my own way in life.
When I write songs I draw from my own experiences, the tune and lyrics usually come to me first running round my head until I finally get them down on paper and put some chords behind them. I also find the immeasurable love I have for my children, a great source of inspiration to me these days. My experiences continue to inspire and fuel my passion for music.”
Katriona also recently raised £2000 for Stargardt’s Connected through the Tennis Writers Dinner.
