We are so excited to share July’s Stargardt’s Star with you all, Paul Appleyard! 🌟
Diagnosed with Stargardt’s at just 11 years old, Paul faced many of the common struggles experienced by young people with vision loss, at a time when technology and support were limited. But with determination, great friends, and a positive mindset, he went on to achieve 9 O-levels, 3 A-levels, and a postgrad diploma in Personnel & Development.
He started his career in banking through a supported scheme, eventually rising to become an Equality & Diversity Manager, and later, Assistant Director at Scope, the very charity that once supported him.
But of course, Paul didn’t stop there. After moving abroad with his family, Paul pursued golf competitively, and became a 3x Blind Golf World Champion, holding his title for 4 years! 🏌️♂️
Whilst overseas, Paul also ran a coaching business called Don’t Wait For Luck, empowering others through motivational speaking with a strong message of creating your own reality through proactive action.
Paul is also one of our wonderful volunteers and Stargardt’s Advocate and he is responsible for connecting people on the Community Register.
Paul’s advice: ‘Be tenacious, never give in. Be different and celebrate that difference. Be proud and don’t let others tell you what you can or can’t do. Be prepared to have knock backs, but get back up and do your thing.”
Paul, your accomplishments, can-do attitude and tenacity is truly admirable. 🌟
