We’re delighted to share our first Stargardt’s Star of 2026, Toby Evans ⭐

Here’s Toby’s story:

“I was first diagnosed in my teenage years while I was at school. I found it hard as I had to give up some sports I loved, such as cricket and tennis, and my studies became harder. I didn’t tell anyone at the time about my diagnosis. In hindsight this was an error, but I think it was how I chose to cope.

Once I did tell my family and close friends, they were very supportive, and slowly I became more positive about the future and more determined to succeed in a job. I qualified as a Chartered Accountant and eventually found a good job in the public sector. I’ve adapted over the years as my sight has worsened, especially through using increasingly powerful tech. I’m not naturally very good at this, but practice and persistence have ensured I can do my job well.

Outside of work, I participate in as many sports as possible, running, cycling, golf, skiing and recently paragliding. I also read (or more accurately listen to) books and podcasts, with history high on my list of interests.

It has been an honour and a pleasure to be involved with Stargardt’s Connected since the start. Thanks to Bhavna, Rosie and the other Trustees, I’ve seen how much the charity helps the community and I really think it will go from strength to strength.”

Toby is also a Stargardt’s Connected Trustee and an absolutely invaluable member of our team. In 2025, he cycled from London (Marble Arch) to Paris (Arc de Triomphe), raising over £4,000 for the charity.

Toby’s Advice: “Give yourself a break, bad days are normal. Try to learn tech if you can, be honest with people about what you can and can’t see, and above all, get in touch with Stargardt’s Connected, we can help.”

PD: a photo of Toby at the beach wearing a blue jacket and a big smile.
